DEFENDING champions CK Bears and the runner-ups, BSI Aces will open the 2017 Saipan Baseball League season with a rematch on Feb. 20.
The game will start at 6:30 p.m. at the Francisco Tanko Palacios Baseball Field, SBL league director, Tony Rogolifoi announced yesterday.
Also the pennant champions, the Bears swept the Aces curbing the championship series to three games last year. Left fielder’s Marvin Kaipat’s run-scoring single handed the Bears one-run victory over the Aces, 5-4.
Rogolifoi said eight teams again will be vying for this year’s championship title. Aside from the CK Bears and BSI Aces the other teams seeking revenge are the Falcons, the GSM, Titanium, Blue Jays, D-9ers, the North Starz, and new comers, Comets.
SBL also expects more young breeds of players seeing action this year. Most of them will be coming from the Little League’s big division that was dissolved last year.
A two-round-robin format will be utilized.
The games will be played Monday to Friday.
The top four teams will advance to the playoffs for the best two out of three series. The winners will play for the title in a best three out of five championship series.
Also, Rogolifoi announced that players for the national and junior national team will be selected soon to represent the CNMI in the second Micronesian Baseball Cup in Palau this June.
The SBL is looking for corporate sponsors to help defray some of the league expenses and humbly solicits from interested parties to contact SBL league director Tony Rogolifoi at 234-6672, or 285-3966.
