NMI now a full member of AFC, FIFA

THE president of the Korean Football Association, Chong Mong-gyu came here for a short visit and to share some news on NMI becoming full member of the Asian Football Confederation and Federation Internationale de Football Association.

Thanks to Northern Mariana Islands Football Association President Jerry Tan, his good friend Mong-gyu was able to visit Saipan over the weekend.

“I’ve known Mr. Chong since he became the president of KFA. He always talked to me discussing about NMIFA on AFC and FIFA level. I just want to take this opportunity to address my appreciation for his interest,” Tan said.

The U18 just returned from training camp in South Korea as are still looking to join more training camps in the future.

“As far as our quest for full membership with AFC/FIFA, I’d say yes we are on the right track,” Tan said.

“It has not been easy, but I’m proud to say for the last twelve years, we have worked hard from a very young age, we have participated in every East Asia and AFC tournament for the past eight years. We are one of the most active member/association within the AFC family and that is very important. It’s not how big you are, not how long you’ve been around but are active you are in a local and international level.”

NMIFA maintains a very active program ranging from young ages to men and women leagues all year-round.

“I am confident we should be a member.” He added.

In addition, five-year president of KFA Mr. Mong-gyu acknowledged NMI’s efforts as well.

As newly elected Council Member of FIFA, he plans to keep his promise in helping make it happen.

“I’ve been trying to help NMI become a full member. Now that I’ve won a seat on FIFA Council, I plan to keep that promise. I think they are qualified, they have been active. They work very hard, they are similar to Gibraltar” shared KFA President.

Mong-Gyu and Tan meet around six times a year, and within every meet with East Asian Football Federation, they move one step closer to making NMI a full member of FIFA.

They are also in talk in developing other sports like baseball to rise like football in the CNMI.
