HANMI Junior Chefs Competition on May 25

(Press Release) — Up-and-coming chefs in the member kitchens of the Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands will put their best dishes on the table on May 25, 2019, at the HANMI Junior Chefs Competition at American Memorial Park.

The competition, held annually as part of the Marianas Visitors Authority’s Taste of the Marianas International Food Festival & Beer Garden, will feature up to eight chefs competing under this year’s theme, “Chinese Style Beef.”

“Every year, HANMI takes time during the Taste of the Marianas to highlight not only the delicious cuisine available for sale at our members’ booths, but the individual talent of our junior chefs,” said HANMI Chairwoman Gloria Cavanagh. “We are excited to see and taste this year’s techniques and mouth-watering creations.”

The competition will begin at 6 p.m., with judging by fellow chefs beginning at 7 p.m. Start times will be staggered to ensure the finished dishes are served fresh to the judges. Contestants must use Certified Angus Beef sirloin flap and at least three local ingredients from Garapan Public Market. All cooking and cutting must be done on the spot.

““This year’s competition will test the culinary skills and creativity of our junior chefs as they endeavor to prepare Chinese-style beef, which involves exploring new flavor profiles and recipes. This promises to be an exciting challenge!” said lead organizer executive chef Samson Tan of Grandvrio Resort Saipan, who took the leadership reins of the event following the departure of long-time lead organizer executive chef Gabriele Colomobo, formerly of Hyatt Regency Saipan. “We also want to extend a big thank you to our partner Triple J Five Star Wholesale, who consistently provides Certified Angus Beef for this annual competition and helps organize the event each year. I wish all the junior chefs the best of luck. May the best chef win. This is the chance to showcase their talent.”

HANMI will award $500 cash for 1st place, $300 for 2nd place, and $200 for 3rd place. Additional in-kind prizes will be awarded by Triple J Five Star Wholesale.

The Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands was established in 1985 as a professional forum for the hospitality industry of the Marianas. HANMI also makes regular charitable donations to support non-profit organizations and tourism-related government projects.
