Candlelight Walk of Honor: Commemorating 75 years since the Battles for Saipan and Tinian

(Press Release) — On June 14, 2019, at sunset, the Committee for the 75th Anniversary of the Battles for Saipan and Tinian invites the community to come together on the eve of Saipan’s Invasion Day to remember the sacrifices made by so many seventy-five years ago.

As the servicemen spent the night on ships outside our lagoon preparing to come ashore decades ago, and civilians awaited the unknown on our island, we will walk together to honor their bravery, sacrifice, and commitment to their country.

Participants will be provided an LED candle (adults) or glow-in-the-dark bracelet (youth). Registration will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial at Kilili Beach, followed by a brief program at 6, and the walk at 6:30. Walkers will head north along the Gov. Froilan C. Tenorio Beach Road Pathway and turn around at the Japanese tank at Quartermaster Road. Along the way there will be water stops and activity stations. The winners of the Memorial Day poetry, art, and wreath competitions will have their work on display.

If you have questions about the walk, call the American Memorial Park Visitor Center at 234- 7207 x 2020 or email brooke_nevitt@nps.gov.
