Lalayak sailing classes start on Oct. 28

(Press Release) — The Lalayak Project uses a curriculum and basic sailing skills developed and taught by Master Navigator Cecilio Raiukiulipiy or one of his accomplished students.

We are looking for people who have time to commit during this one-month program as well as people willing to give back to the community as instructors to future cohorts. Let’s continue to revive the sailing traditions of the Marianas by working together!

There are six lessons. The three lessons on land are 2-hours long and the three lessons on water are 4-hours long. In addition, 10 practice sails must be completed.

Prerequisite swim tests must be passed before starting each session, including swimming non-stop (untimed, any stroke) for 400 meters and treading water for one hour.

Lessons are scheduled both on weekends or after school/work. The schedule will be determined based on teacher availability and weather conditions, and will be subject to change.

Final exams — both a written test and a practical test must be passed in order to be certified as skipper (“magus”) or crew. Classes can be made up in subsequent cohorts as needed.

Prepare for the one-hour water tread test scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 19, 2019 at 10 a.m. at Tanapag Beach.
