Tropical storm condition 3 for Saipan and Tinian

(Press Release) — Based on information from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam and compiled by the CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management, the center of tropical storm Phanfone was located 360 miles east-southeast of Rota, 340 miles southeast of Tinian and Saipan, and 450 miles southeast of Pagan as of 7 p.m., Monday.

Tropical storm Phanfone was moving west at around 14 mph. This motion is forecast to continue through Wednesday, putting the system over the Northern Marianas by Tuesday night.

Maximum sustained winds were 40 mph. Tropical storm Phanfone was expected to steadily intensify through Wednesday evening, making it a strengthening tropical storm over the Northern Marianas Tuesday night and Wednesday.

Because of the anticipated threat of tropical storm Phanfone, Gov. Eloy S. Inos has declared tropical storm condition 3 for Saipan and Tinian and a typhoon watch for Alamagan and Pagan as of 8:30 p.m., Monday.

Residents of Saipan and Tinian are urged to take precautionary measures when driving on highways due to heavy rain showers and possible flooding in low-lying areas.

For more information, call 237-8000 or 211. For those in the Northern Islands, contact the CNMI EOC Dispatch Center at high frequency single side band radio on frequency 5.205.0.
