AG’s Cup topic this year: Same sex marriage

(Press Release) — The Office of the Attorney General says the 31st Annual Attorney General’s Cup Speech Competition will be held on April 30, 2015 at 10 a.m. in the CNMI Supreme Court Courtroom.

“The AG’s Cup provides our high school students with the opportunity to research an issue that affects the commonwealth, form a position on the issue, and showcase their voice and passion for his or her position on the topic,” says AG Edward Manibusan.

This year, eight high schools will be participating: Marianas, Saipan Southern, Kagman, Mt. Carmel, Grace Christian Academy, Marianas Baptist Academy, Dr. Rita H. Inos and Tinian.

This year’s topic focuses on same sex marriages in the CNMI, which is a legal issue before the United States Supreme Court. The issue presented is: “Should the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands allow marriages between two people of the same sex? Why or why not?”

The AG states, “This is a timely issue for civil discourse and discussion. I encourage all students in the high schools to weigh in on this issue by competing in the 2015 Attorney General’s Cup.”

The Office of the Attorney General welcomes the public to attend the speech competition and support the students of the CNMI.
