KOROR (Palau Horizon) – Head Start is providing free lead testing to children to check if they have been exposed to the toxic metal that is usually found in batteries.

A Head Start staff said they offer free treatments to kids who will be found to have been exposed to the toxins.

The free testing operation started last Wednesday at Ngerbeched, followed by Medalaii on Thursday.

Head Start will have a testing session in Meyuns on Monday morning, in Ngermid on Tuesday both in the morning and afternoon, in Olbedekall on Wednesday morning, and in Aimeliik/Ngeremelngui on Thursday morning.

The following week, the Head Start group will be in Ngchesar/Melekeok on February 15, both in the morning and afternoon; in Ngiwal/Ngaraard on February 16, both morning and afternoon; in Ngerchelong on February 17 in the morning; and in Peleliu on February 18 in the morning.

They might also want to coordinate recycling and education campaigns with DEQ in order to avoid further problems with lead in the ground water.
