KOROR (Palau Horizon) – THE House of Delegates yesterday, in its regular session approved on third and final reading the measure that increases the salary of the president, vice president and the ministers.

House Bill 8-65-5 stated that the increase is long overdue. Adding that it has been nearly 14 years since the laws governing the salaries of the president, vice president and the ministers were modified.

The bill proposes that the president receives annual salary of $90,000, the vice president receives annual salary of $65,000 and each minister receives annual salary of $45,000.

Earlier President Johnson Toribiong proposed an increase in the salaries, it was then rejected by both Houses.

The House also passed on third reading the proposed measure increasing hotel room tax.

Although Politicians continue spreading the words about lack of government financial support, however we still noticing a lot of salary increments. President previous salary is ideal income for the highest government post of a small developing country, especially Palau with inadequate source of revenue. The most accommodating consideration is to diminish the Chief Justice, Senators and Delegates salaries to place him the highest paid elected government employee and use that money to upgrade the income of all unprivileged government employees.
