PALAU President Johnson Toribiong will be among the guests of honor when Gov. Benigno R. Fitial is sworn in for his second term on Monday.
While here, Toribiong will meet with the Palauan community, according to former Palau Consul to Saipan Eileen Kintol.
The meeting will be held at the Kilili Beach Pavilion on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Palauan Community president Rufino Aguon said they will discuss the closure of the Palau consulate with Toribiong.
“We are inviting all the Palauans to attend the meeting so they can also express their other concerns,” he said.
He said their group has already sent a petition asking the Palau government to reconsider its plan to close the consulate.
Palau closed down it consulates on Guam and Saipan on Dec. 31 due to budgetary constraint.
Kintol said her term of office as consul ended when their office stopped operation last week.
“We have yet to receive a reply from the government whether to reopen the office or not,” she said.
Aguon said the Palauan community here is hoping that the Toribiong administration will reconsider its decision.
He said the consulate assists Palauans in processing their passports and facilitating communications with their homeland.
