A firefighter aims a hose at a pickup truck on fire Saturday noon on As Terlaje Hill. No one was hurt.
A FORD Ranger pickup truck towing a trailer caught fire after the vehicle overheated on As Terlaje Hill, near Northern Marianas College, Saturday noon.
The passenger told Variety that they just came from the Lower Base transfer station and were heading back home when the driver noticed thick smoke coming from under the hood of the truck.
He said the truck had overheated and the thick smoke hindered their view of the road, so they pulled onto the shoulder of the road and got out before the truck was fully engulfed in fire.
In a statement, the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services stated that on Dec. 17, 2022, at approximately 12:54 p.m., it received a report about a vehicle on fire near the NMC traffic light.
DFEMS Public Information Officer Robert Mojica said at 12:55 p.m., Medic-5, Forestry-5 and Engine-2 responded to the location.
At 1 p.m., Medic-5, and Forestry-5 were the first units to arrive on the scene.
Mojica said the pickup truck was already engulfed in flames. Forestry-5 and Engine-2 then “deployed their attack lines and extinguished the fire.”
“There were two individuals that were inside the vehicle before the fire broke out [but] they managed to safely get away from the vehicle,” Mojica added.
“They were seen by the medics and had no injuries to report,” he said.
The all-clear was given at 1:06 p.m. by the Alpha-shift commander, Capt. Juan Climaco T. Laniyo, Mojica said.
The Division of Fire Prevention and Assessment arrived on the scene to conduct their investigation and assessment.
“The cause of the fire will be put out at a later date and time,” Mojica said.
