American Samoa election results official

PAGO PAGO (RNZ Pacific/Pacnews) — The American Samoan election results have been declared official.

The Elections Office said no challenges had been received by the close off on Tues after the poll on Nov. 6.

The incumbent U.S. Congresswoman, Aumua Amata, garnered a total of 83.3 percent of the votes.

None of her challengers got more than 10 percent of the ballots.

A veto override referendum was also easily defeated.

The referendum had sought to amend the local constitution and give the legislature the authority to override the governor’s veto instead of the U.S. secretary of the Interior as happens now.

In the house contests eight of the incumbents lost their seats.
