Position statement of NYMWPS about the Philippine midterm elections

(Press Release) — The National Youth Movement for West Philippine Sea or NYMWPS, a transnational youth organization in asserting the territorial sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea, recognizes the significance of the electoral process in strengthening Philippine democracy; but when the integrity of such process is doubtful, it dampens the spirit of democracy.

The 2019 midterm elections would have been an opportunity for the Duterte administration to strengthen what is generally perceived as an eroding democracy for the Philippines. It would have been a chance to promote social integration, improve governance by ensuring effective check and balance, and pave the way for a healthy and productive political co-existence.

The reported alleged fraud because of glitches that involved a considerable number of vote-counting machines, as well as the transparency server that relayed unofficial election results, have clearly dented the integrity of the electoral process and have cast doubt on the impartiality of the Commission on Elections or Comelec.

NYMWPS joins the other sectors in challenging the Comelec and the Duterte administration to fulfill its mandate to the people. Unless the clouds of doubt on the integrity of the election results are cleared, we cannot be convinced that the people have indeed spoken, says Dr. Celia Lamkin, NYMWPS founder and global chair.
