Panel defers action on ‘forgiveness’ bill

THE Senate Committee on Public Utilities, Transportation and Communications has deferred action on the bill that would transfer the indebtedness of Commonwealth Utilities Corp. to the Department of Finance.

The committee chairman, Sen. Diego M. Songao, Covenant-Rota, said they had to wait for the outcome of the negotiations between CUC and the Commonwealth Development Authority before acting on S.B. 13-5.

Songao said he also met with his House counterpart, Rep. Jose Deleon P. Guerrero, R-Saipan, to discuss the ongoing negotiations.

The senator said CUC and CDA will meet again by the end of this month.

“They have not concluded a settlement, (but) they all agreed that the case will be withdrawn from the court,” Songao said.

CDA filed a lawsuit against CUC for its failure to pay its $106 million debt.

Songao said lawmakers are “ready” to assist the negotiations.

“If legislative action is needed, then we will be willing to assist,” he added.
