The benefits of sweet potato leaves

IN the Micronesian region, sweet potato leaves are part of the islanders’ diet.

In Palau, the Japanese “korokke” or potato croquettes is prepared with sweet potato leaves and tuna.

Said one island resident: “We love sweet potato leaves and I often buy them so we’ll have a variety of green vegetables to enjoy.” Sweet potato can also be easily planted around the house.

Sweet potato leaves, which are also consumed in Asia and Africa, have meaningful health benefits.

According to research by Wilmer Barrera and David Picha from the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center, ascorbic acid, riboflavin, and vitamin B6 contents are higher in leaf tissue than in other tissue types. Mature and young leaves of sweet potato could provide significant amounts of vitamin B6 to the human diet. The researchers also noted that the vitamin B6 content in sweet potato leaves compares well with fruits and vegetables such as broccoli, avocados, carrots, bananas and cauliflower.

Moreover, research indicates that potato leaves may benefit those with heart ailments. They are also good for brain health, and they assist vision, reduce inflammation, and help maintain healthy skin and hair.

The leaves possess anti-oxidant, anti-mutagen, anti-cancer, anti-hypertension, anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. They can provide relief from constipation.

The drink made from the leaves helps eradicate diarrhea, nausea and stomach aches. It is also effective for colds, flus, burns, bug bites and scrapes. Moreover, it lowers anxiety, stress and blood pressure.

Sweet potato leaves are the best substitute for spinach.
