The Marianas Visitors Authority facilitated the activity for visitors to the island on May 22 and 23, 2019, as part of the “I’m a Green Tourist” event.

“Most of the tourists planted in pairs or in groups and then excitedly took pictures one by one beside the coconut trees they planted,” said Vida Borja, MVA field operations manager. “They had fun planting, even under the glaring heat of the sun at 1:30 p.m.!”

The visitors planted coconut trees along Broadway, the main thoroughfare through island. The name of each participant was recorded as an acknowledgement of their work.

“My sincerest appreciation to the tourists and tour agents who participated during this much needed tree planting,” said Tinian Mayor Edwin Aldan. “Now they have more reasons to visit back our beautiful island.

May is celebrated annually as Marianas Tourism Month. Other activities for the month included the 21st Annual Taste of the Marianas International Food Festival & Beer Garden; visitor greetings and tree planting by students in Rota; roadside waving to promote awareness of tourism; tourism trivia on Power 99, KCNM-KZMI, KWAW and KKMP; and more.
