Carrie Pangelinan tops tourism graphic art design contest

(MVA) — “Obyan Beach is located on the southern tip of Saipan. This hidden oasis, protected by Naftan Point, is a favorite to locals, tourists, and beach enthusiasts. The calm waters are perfect for snorkeling, kayaking, paddleboarding, or for a short swim.”

This description and a well-designed graphic art layout won Carrie Pangelinan 1st place in the Tourism Month 2017 Graphic Arts Design Contest titled “See My Marianas,” jointly held by the Marianas Visitors Authority and Marianas Tourism Education Council. Pangelinan and four other top winners from among CNMI students in grades 6-12 were awarded Saturday (May 27) at the Taste of the Marianas International Food Festival & Beer Garden.

“The ‘See My Marianas’ Graphic Art Design Contest was an overall great experience!” said Pangelinan. “It was an opportunity for us, the youth, to really get a glimpse of what the islands have to offer.”

Other winners were Kryzha Parungao on Coral Ocean Golf & Resort, 2nd place; Louise Zheng Li on Ladder Beach, 3rd place, Kennedy Vila on Suicide Cliff, 4th place; and Timothy Retirado on Suicide Cliff, 5th place.

“I think it was quite amazing to see such an opportunity to use my photography in such a competition!” said Vila of Marianas High School. “It helped me incorporate and improve my graphic design skills and sort of gauge how well I compare with others. Overall, it was a great experience.”

“Everything is beautiful in its own way. Anything can be a part of beauty,” said Retirado.

Submissions were required to be an original digital design with the words “See My Marianas” featuring a site/location in the Marianas that the artist would encourage people to visit. Entries include the name of the site/location, and brief 1-4 sentence description of the site, and the following: www.mymarianas,com and icons of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.

“This year our staff had the idea to do a contest for Tourism Month that would allow students with visual and artistic design skills a greater opportunity to express their ideas about the Marianas,” said MVA Managing Director Christopher A. Concepcion. “Our winners have cleverly demonstrated how ‘Tourism is Everybody’s Business’ by doing their own mini- promotional flyers, which the MVA is proud to share on our social media platforms with potential visitors.”

Prizes were $150 cash + $150 Taste tokens for 1st place, with additional cash and token prizes for 2nd-5th place.

“Wow, some of these entries were impressive…very well executed and inviting,” said MTEC Chairwoman Vicky Benavente. “This contest shows there’s a lot of graphic design skill among our young students, and we hope this contest will plant a seed on how they can use their talent in the tourism industry and in promoting The Marianas, even while they’re still in school.”

Benavente also acknowledged MTEC Board Members Catherine Perry Harris, Larry Lee, and Wendi Herring and MVA Community Projects Assistant Demalyn Pagarao for contest coordination and judging.
