May is Women’s Health Month

A SERIES of events promoting women’s health will be held this month.

Lt. Gov. Victor Hocog has signed a proclamation designating May as Women’s Health Month.

Division of Public Health Director Margarita Aldan said the goal of the proclamation is to promote health among women who tend to forget to take care of themselves.

“We are great caretakers of our loved ones, but we are not such great caretakers of ourselves. We really need to start taking care of ourselves. When we take care of ourselves, everybody is healthy,” she said.

This year’s theme is, “Begins with Me.” The Women’s Health Month or WHM Committee has prepared activities that aim to promote women’s physical and mental wellness.

The activities started on Friday, May 4, as the committee hosted a health outreach at the Nutritional Assistance Program office from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The Maternal and Child Health Bureau, through the WHM Committee, partnered with Stellar Marianas in hosting the 5K “Run for Mom” on Saturday, May 5.

From May 7 to 11, the WHM Committee is conducting a “Breastfeeding Boot Camp” at the Pacific Islands Club Saipan from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On May 16,  23 and 30, members of the WHM Committee will be on the radio from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. to discuss preventive care, gestational diabetes, tobacco use, healthy habits, physical activity, and related topics.

The WHM Committee will host a village health  outreach from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Garapan MIHA Housing on May 17; at the Koblerville Youth Center on May 25; and at the Tanapag Youth Center on May 31.

On May 25, the committee will hold the first Mom and Me talent show from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the multi-purpose center.

The committee wishes to point out, however, that the activities, dates, and times may  change.
