May is National Military Appreciation Month

ACTING Gov. Arnold I. Palacios on Monday signed a proclamation designating May 20-27, 2019 as Memorial Week and May National Military Appreciation Month.

Veterans Affairs Office Executive Officer Stanley Iakopo said the proclamation is a tribute to the families of missing and fallen heroes, and to the men and women who answered the call of serving their country.

“They gave their lives for our freedom. Their sacrifices remind us that our freedom is not bought cheap,” Iakopo said.

He appealed to the community not to forget the time-honored tradition of memorializing the valuable lives of fallen heroes and their sacrifices while serving the armed forces.

Palacios, for his part, asked the community to offer prayers to the men and women who are serving the country.

“Members of the U.S. armed forces have placed our nation’s safety before their own for generations,” the proclamation stated. “From the first shots fired at Lexington and Concord to the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, these brave patriots have taken on great risks to keep us safe, and they have served with honor and distinction. All Americans who have enjoyed the blessings of peace and liberty remain in their debt.”

The proclamation added, “As we commend their deeds, we also bear a heavy burden of responsibility to ensure that their sacrifices will not have been in vain. This means that as we uphold the ideals for which many have given their last full measure of devotion, the U.S. must never waver in its determination to defend itself, to be faithful in protecting liberty at home and abroad, and to pursue peace in the world.”
