Yuan: Bridging legal expertise and tax skills at Dotts law firm

At the Dotts law firm, aside from the vast amount of experience held by Mr. Michael Dotts himself, interested clients can likewise take advantage of the tax-law skills held by Anthea Yuan.

Originally a native of Tianjin, China, Yuan received a juris doctorate from the University of Minnesota in 2016.

While still working towards her law degree, Yuan gained tax-law experience volunteering at her alma mater’s Tax Clinic. After she graduated she became a research assistant at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law in 2017.

Yuan shares that her natural math skills made her stand out on her way to practicing law.

“I like numbers,” she says. “After I got into law school almost nobody liked numbers.”

Yuan’s areas of practice are tax, finance, litigation, and other transactional work. She is admitted to the New York State Bar, Illinois State Bar, and is an IRS enrolled agent.

Yuan shares that, in the CNMI, much of her work at the Dotts law firm involves advising clients on how to structure their business or how to calculate their refund and rebate credit.

She likewise advises clients from the states looking to make a move to the CNMI for tax benefits.

“A lot of people are retirees,” Yuan shares. “They want to retire here but we have a different tax reporting system than the federal one.”

Of course as a native speaker of Mandarin, when Chinese businessmen schedule a meeting with Mr. Dotts, she can go above and beyond her job description to be of service to clients.

“I will help them to explain the character of what they actually want,” Yuan shares, “because they don’t know how to explain effectively even if they speak a certain kind of English. But also, if they want to set up business it’s also tax related and I try to do my best to help everyone who speaks Chinese.”
