A 77-year-old man and his 69-year-old wife called the police after their adopted son assaulted his father on Aug. 23, at around 4:47 p.m.
Through a Korean interpreter, the couple told police that 21-year-old In Won Hwang arrived home upset and started acting violently toward them.
The victims said Hwang came into their bedroom and “started throwing things.”
Hwang also shouted profanities at them, and punched his father in the arm many times.
When the father tried to leave the room, Hwang used his head to hit his father’s head to prevent him from leaving.
The father told police that Hwang “had been acting this way (hitting and yelling at them) every two to three days for the past three years.”
The father said he is diabetic and “after these incidents he urinates blood.”
He told police that these incidents will only end once he and his wife are dead.
The couple said Hwang did not give any reason why he did these things to them nor was he visibly drunk whenever he acted violently.
It was his mother who called the police when she saw Hwang punching her husband multiple times.
The woman, who said she has heart problems, also told police that when she called 911, she used the only English words she could think of, “Help me!”
She said Hwang then snatched her cell phone before slamming it back on her hand which caused an injury to her left hand.
She said Hwang then left their house.
She told police that their doors could not be locked because Hwang had previously damaged them. She said Hwang would come back and hurt them again.
Police observed that household items were scattered and broken in the bedroom and living room.
On Tuesday, the defendant appeared before Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho for a bail hearing.
Judge Camacho imposed a $15,000 cash bail on Hwang who was charged with senior citizen physical abuse, disturbing the peace-domestic violence, assault and battery, false arrest, and vandalism.
After the hearing, the defendant was remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections and was ordered to return to court for a preliminary hearing on Sept. 1 at 10 a.m. and for an arraignment on Sept. 13 at 9 a.m.
Assistant Attorney General Steve Kessel appeared for the government, while Assistant Public Defender Karie Comstock was appointed by the court to represent the defendant.
