SHIRLEY’S is at the top of the team standings with 50 points after winning most of its games on Friday and Saturday at the Ada gym.
Among their victories, Shirley’s Andreau Galvez and Lance Gallardo’s match against Taga’s Dan Macario and Janelle Pangilinan in the A Men’s Doubles was intense.
In the first set, Shirley’s managed to build momentum early as Galvez and Gallardo were in sync, scoring points back to back.
The Taga tandem defended well and kept pace throughout most of the exchange but the inaccuracy of their returns prevented Macario and Pangilinan from closing in as Shirley’s romped to victory, 21-1.
In the second set, Taga started to play with more aggressiveness and was able to turn the tide.
With each point that Shirley’s made, Taga had an answer on the other end as Macario and Pangilinan held onto the lead to notch a much-needed win, 21-20, to stay alive and force a third and final set.
After a handful of lead exchanges, Shirley’s rekindled the fire with Gallardo in the frontline scoring six consecutive points to beat Taga 21-14.
B Women’s Doubles
In the B Women’s Doubles, Shirley’s Angie Ito and Miles Guerrero prevailed over Taga’s Windy Fernandez and Shirley Kim in two sets.
Taga’s pair played well as they worked to find their groove.
But Shirley’s duo were more aggressive with Ito igniting the run with eight straights points while Guerrero collected the remaining points needed to claim the first set, 21-15.
The second set was no different as Shirley’s Ito and Guerrero continued to press on.
Kim was able to penetrate through Shirley’s defensive walls, but it was only a matter of time before Ito and Guerrero found their rhythm to wrap up the match in triumph, 21-15.
Shirley’s now leads the IT&E Badminton Tournament with 50 points followed by Golden R and Taga sharing 39 points. United Badminton Club is fourth with 27 points and Community Badminton Club is fifth with 25 points.
