Local group to commemorate Amelia Earhart’s birthday

(Press Release) — The Amelia Earhart Memorial Association is inviting the public to join the commemoration of her 124th birthday on Saturday, July 24.

The association is hosting the event at the CNMI Museum from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. The association is celebrating Earhart’s birthday with various activities to continue providing public education to the community.

Residents of Saipan have attested that Earhart was seen on island after her disappearance on July 2, 1937 while attempting to become the first female to complete a circumnavigational flight of the globe.

The association is hoping to build an Amelia Earhart monument on Saipan and has been working tirelessly to solicit funds for the project.

“Every year as we conduct public education, more people get involved and we see their support,” the association said. “This year we have been going to schools to present to the students the history of Amelia Earhart. Every piece of information about Amelia is important, and if her monument is built on Saipan, it will invite visitors from all over the world to come to our island to learn about Amelia and the place where she was last seen.”

This Saturday, July 24, at the CNMI Museum, Fr. Michael of the Diocese of Chalan Kanoa will share his father’s story about Amelia Earhart while Marie SC Castro will recite a poem she wrote.

Also performing is the Marianas High School Concert Band led by their instructor Gina Aguilar.

A tour of the museum will follow and refreshments will be provided.

Entrance to the museum is free, but everyone must comply with the Covid-19 protocols by wearing a face mask and observing social-distancing.

The association would like to extend their utmost appreciation to Herman’s Modern Bakery which donated a birthday cake for Amelia Earhart  last year and the individuals who also contributed to the success of last year’s event.

“We are hoping you will join us again this year,” the association said.

For this year’s event, “we are extending our appreciation to the CNMI Museum Board of Directors, Mr. Dan Aquino and staff, Mr. Glen Manglona of Marianas Agupa talk show, and the individuals who have taken part in the planning for this year’s event. We thank you all for your continued support!”
