THE family that plays together wins together, and that was how Da Misters triumphed in the Sets for Pets Boonie Babies fundraising volleyball tournament Saturday at the Fiesta Resort & Spa beach.

The double-elimination 4v4 coed event featured 15 teams and 82 players, and as the proverbial dust settled, the two teams that made it to the finals were Da Misters and All About Aces.
All About Aces lost to Da Misters in the quarterfinals, but the Aces fought their way back to the top of the standings and had no intention to go down easily the second time around.
However, Da Misters’ teamwork and communication continued to be their biggest assets as they covered each other’s back on defense and retaliated with bumps and sets to finish with powerful spikes and claim the first set 23-21.
In the second half, however, All About Aces was an almost different team. Implementing a plan to counter Da Misters’ killer offense, the Aces played more aggressively and held their ground defensively with successful returns to notch a 21-15 victory.
The Aces gave a good fight in the third and deciding set, but in the end, Da Misters seized control and played with more accuracy.
The Aces hung on for as long as they could but with the opposing team on a roll, it did not take too long before Da Misters triumphed 15-11 to win the match and the championship.
En route to the title match, Da Misters took down He’s Bleeding, 21-8; Mixed Breed, 21-14; All About Aces, 21-12; and Ocho 21-15, 21-16.
All About the Aces defeated Bump Set Spike 21-11 and CBB 21-15 before losing to the Da Misters 12-21. All About Aces then edged VB 4 Life 21-19 and slipped past Ocho 21-18, 23-21 to reach the finale.
Sets for Pets was the first ever volleyball tournament fundraiser for Saipan Cares for Animals or SCA.
Organized by Boonie Babies Saipan, a dog rescue/foster organization on island, Sets for Pets aimed to raise money and awareness for the boonie dogs of Saipan.
“We wanted to create an event where people from the community could not only have fun but help benefit an amazing cause,” said Grace Keilbach, co-founder of Boonie Babies.
“Our main goals were to raise money for SCA, spread awareness about what people can do to help, and promote boonie dog adoptions. A lot of people don’t realize the love these dogs and cats have to give! We were overwhelmed with the support from our community and look forward to seeing everyone on the courts again next year! We were able to raise over $2,000 as well as get four Boonie dogs adopted.”
