DEPARTMENT of Public Safety Commissioner Robert A. Guerrero said DPS has not recently terminated patrol officers for allegedly testing positive for drug use.
But he said in the past, there had been police officers who tested positive for drugs, “and they went through a process.”
Guerrero said for their first offense, these officers signed an agreement with the Office of Personnel Management that subjected them to termination on second offense.
Some officers who committed a second offense resigned even before the review process, Guerrero said.
He said in 2021, one officer resigned, but added that he could not provide more information about it.
Guerrero said in the meantime, “there’s a lot of work that needs to be done to improve our service to the community.”
