TRENCH Tech gym instructor Cuki Alvarez said the first Mixed Martial Arts kids class on Saturday went smoothly.
A total of 12 children attended the class, he said, adding that some had also taken kickboxing lessons in the past.
But since most of the children were first-timers, Alvarez said the class was structured “to allow them to build up to the moves and learn the techniques slowly.”
The children “really enjoyed it for sure,” he added. “I believe it automatically builds their self-esteem because we teach them how to defend themselves and they learn fight techniques that build confidence.”
After the class, Alvarez said he received calls from parents who were also very interested in signing up their children for the next class. These include some parents who observed the class on Saturday and commended Alvarez and Trench Tech for providing children with this type of training.
Alvarez’s co-instructor is Rick Bauer whose three kids — Beau, Quinn and Huck — are students of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu kids class.
For her part, Rick’s wife, Kerri Bauer, teaches yoga at Trench Tech every Wednesday from 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.
