(MV) — The CNMI government is committing $4 million to the Pacific Mini Games that the Commonwealth will host next year.
In a letter dated March 22, 2021 to Andrew Minogue, chief executive officer of the Pacific Games Council, Gov. Ralph DLG Torres said: “On behalf of the [CNMI], it is a great honor to host the 2022 Pacific Mini Games. This wonderful demonstration of collaboration and partnership is truly an event worthy of celebration. With the inclusion of tennis, weightlifting, and va’a the CNMI hereby certifies its commitment of [$4 million] to the Pacific Mini Games Committee for the facilitation of the event.”
The governor added, “We look forward to welcoming athletes, dignitaries, and guests for the first ever 2022 Pacific Mini Games hosted in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Although we have experienced significant delay in hosting this event due to unforeseen natural disasters beyond our control, I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to the Pacific Mini Games Committee and the rest of the participating stakeholders for making this event possible.”
Torres said in the midst of the global Covid-19 pandemic, “isolation and distance have been a necessity that has impacted our shared cultural values of community and togetherness. As we emerge from this crisis, these games, and the ability of sport to bring people together, is a welcomed sign of normalcy and a celebration of our resilience and the cultural ties that bind us.”
He said initial payment in preparation of this event will be remitted by the CNMI Department of Finance in April 2021.
