A ladder to success, a strong belief in oneself

Ruthzel Perez, general manager of McDonald’s in Garapan, is a living proof of this truism.

She started as a crewmember in January 2010.

After a year of hard work, Perez received the Employee of the Quarter Award and was named McDonald’s Employee of the Year in 2011.

Perez’ journey to success continued, and in 2012 she was promoted to shift manager.

In 2016, she was designated “people manager” in charge of training crew members and scheduling work shifts.

In 2019, she climbed higher up the ladder again to become acting general manager tasked to oversee operations.

“I go for everything and anything. I am a ‘go-getter,’” Perez said.

A mother, she also believes in women empowerment, adding that her greatest strength is her family.

She said the ingredients for success include patience, efficiency and meticulousness even with the “little things.”

Perez said a leader must also be an excellent listener.

Believe in yourself

Jocelyn R. Asistores, the 2019 global McDonald’s awardee, said she believes in herself and wants to show the world that she’s an empowered woman.

The general manager of McDonald’s Middle Road, Asistores also believes that business leaders can empower more women by giving them equal opportunity and listening to their ideas.

Asistores said some still think that a woman is “weak” and should be a “home figure.”

But being a woman has never hindered women from accomplishing great things, she added.

When she was promoted to the position of general manager, she became responsible for operating a world-famous restaurant, and winning the prestigious Ray Kroc Award.

“Women should continue fighting for their rights,” she said. “They should speak up to be heard while advocating for equality.”

Perseverance is also an important leadership quality, she added. “I am a person who will never give up on anything.”

Her advice to women today: “Always believe in themselves and be ready to face any problems, trials, challenges, frustrations, disappointments or rejections because these are the spices of life and they will make you braver, smarter, tougher and wiser.”
