THE Rotary Club of Saipan’s officers and members reminisced about the good old days as they celebrated their 53rd Charter Night in the Hibiscus Hall of Crowne Plaza Resort on Tuesday.
One of the highlights of the evening was a photo slideshow presented by the club’s founding president, David “Uncle Dave” Mangarero Sablan, who also narrated the stories behind each picture.
A member of the Rotary Club of Guam since 1957, Uncle Dave organized the Rotary Club on Saipan when he moved to the island in 1965.
He said when the charter presentation took place in March 1968, many Rotarians from Guam, including the island’s governor at the time, Manuel F. Leon Guerrero, joined the celebration at the Royal Taga Hotel (where Saipan World Resort is located today).
Uncle Dave expressed hope that the Rotary Club of Saipan will continue to do the things it has done through the years.
The club’s first female member, long-time educator Agnes M. McPhetres said she was very happy to see how the Rotary Club of Saipan has grown and how it continues to serve the community.
Today, the Rotary Club of Saipan is led by President Sonya P. Dancoe, President-Elect Sean Ficke, Vice President Wendell Posadas, Secretary Irene Holl, Treasurer Glen Perez, Sgt.-at-Arms Curtis Dancoe, Club Service Director Jessy Loomis, International Service Director Ivan Ilmov, Vocational Service Director Joseph Torres, Community Service Director Joann Aquino, New Generation Director Gregory Pat Borja and Foundation Director Das Krishnan.
