Shirley’s notches 2nd straight win in women’s soccer

SHIRLEY’S Football Club  leads  Division A of the Dove Women’s League Spring 2021 after earning its second victory by trouncing the TanHoldings Football Club, 8-0, on Sunday at the mini-pitch of the NMI Soccer Training Center.

The aggressiveness of Shirley’s players was all they needed to open up several scoring opportunities. Lillian Podziewski drew first blood at the 11th minute, and her goal acted as a sparkplug as her team-mates scored three more goals: Fiona Bucalig at the 14th-minute mark, Jeralyn Castillo at the 19th and Jullianne Hall at the 21st to establish a 4-0 lead.

TanHoldings’ players tried but failed to end the onslaught. While focused on protecting their end of the field, they could not find the opportunity to score.

In the second half, Shirley’s players resumed their offensive. Podziewski found her second goal at the 27th minute while Katrina Costales took over the spotlight with a hat-trick, sinking three goals in a row at the 35th,  40th and 44th minute marks to secure a blowout victory for Shirley’s, 8-0.

It’s a tie

The other Division A match was between the Kanoa Football Club and the Southern United Football Club, and it ended in a 3-3 draw.

It was a faced-paced battle as Kanoa quickly found the back of the net just two minutes into the action, courtesy of Kelsey McClellan.

But this was answered by SUFC’s Britany Wally for a 1-1 tie.

In the second half, SUFC was briefly in control as Wally and Kaithlyn Chavez broke through with a goal each in the 30th and 38th minute marks to give their team a 3-1 lead.

Kanoa then turned the tables with McClellan scoring her team’s second goal.

The SUFC players gave it their all, but Kanoa constantly attacked to gradually open up cracks in the SUFC defense, allowing McClellan to sink another goal which tied the game, 3-3.

With neither team able to score the game-winning shot, the match ended in a draw.
