Christmas tree decoration judging today

This year’s theme is “Going Green.” Schools gathered all recyclable items and fashioned them into Christmas ornaments to decorate their trees.

Variety met with Saipan Community School students and their teacher  and asked them about their tree.

“We used the coral reef as the focus of the theme,” said SCS teacher Debbie Winkfield.

“This is a fantastic activity for the kids. I have not seen anyone on the mainland or other places do such an activity that allows the children to have hands-on education about recycling and the importance of that practice,” Winkfield told Variety. “The students have worked very hard on this project and have had a lot of fun as well. I’m very glad to see that their work will be displayed for all to see.”

The students told Variety that they started preparations for the decorations in October.

“We would work for 45 minutes a day on the decorations and we’d also come in on Saturdays to work,” said SCS student Ringo Leung.

Schoolmates Stephanie Lee, Colin Ramsey and Nathan Wong worked with Leung in decorating the tree.

They showed this reporter the many ways recycled items can be crafted into beautiful works of art.

Judging starts today at 4 p.m. at the Paseo De Marianas.
