Bill eliminating central box in Koror too late — PEC

Ringang said that since the compact road was done, there is no more central box in Koror. The proper box is placed in the States’ office during the election especially in the Babeldaob States, except only those in the Island States.

He added that they put two polling places during the election in Kayangel, Peleliu, Angaur, Sonsorol and Hatohobei. One is in Koror as a central box and one in the State’s office as a proper box.

House Bill No. 8-74-5 was already passed in the second reading of the House of Delegates (HOD).

Aside from the elimination of central box, the bill also mandates all voting outside the country as absentee ballots. The measure also makes Election Day’s holidays and the voting tabulation will also be done at the polling places after the election.

However, upon passage on the second reading, the bill was amended to remove the elimination of outside voting as it has been implemented in the legislation and that the holiday for election is only for general elections.

After the Bill will be approved in the third and final reading then this will be transmitted to the Senate for its action.

Meanwhile, the PEC has already set Nov 30 as a schedule for the Kayangel State special election. But the PEC has not yet released the names of the candidates as the filing of nominating petition is ongoing as of press time.

The special election will be conducted to fill the vacant seat of legislator Kurt Ngiraked who did not assume his post since he won in May general election. He was reportedly employed and working in Palau Community College.

Ngiraked is one of the 12 legislators who won in May 25 general elections. However, he did not take his oath and assume his function since their installation on July 1.
