GTC first graders visit Saipan Zoo

“Well, the quarter is wrapping up and my students have been learning a lot about living things, non-living things and different animal groups. What better way to apply the lessons than to have a real life connection to what was learned?” Camacho told Variety in an interview.

The children also had the opportunity to see animals not usually bred in the CNMI such as lions, tigers and monkeys which are just among a few of the zoo’s 21 exotic species.

Fish and Wildlife also joined in on the fun with  Paul Radley enlightening the children regarding the wildlife in the CNMI.

First graders Grace Allen and Akira Kabokurn told Variety in an interview that they learned about mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds and fish in school.

“We came here to see the animals and I loved the guinea pigs!” Allen said. “But I’m afraid of the lions and tigers.”

“Well, I love the lions and tigers,” said Kaborkurn with a huge grin on his face.

The girls loved seeing the rabbits much more than the other animals while the boys enjoyed meeting real live lions and tigers.

As they were departing the zoo, Camacho said their visit was also a treat for the students’ hard work throughout the quarter as well as for their educational benefit. It is a great teaching strategy to have the children experience a real connection to what they are learning. It is the most efficient way to really go through the full learning experience, she said.
