USCIS looks into guest workers’ waiver request

Annette V. Speaks, USCIS customer assistance office supervisor, told Rabby Syed, United Workers Movement president, that his letter has been assigned the case number 885573.

Syed, in a letter last month, asked U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano to waive the advance parole fee of $305 for nonresidents who have to leave the CNMI due to an emergency, citing the islands’ bad economic situation.

Speaks, in her letter to Syed dated Nov. 4, said the USCIS receives a high volume of correspondence on a daily basis.

“Some, like yours, are in the form of comments or suggestions. These comments and suggestion are very important to us; we appreciate them and take them seriously,” she said.

But she added that adopting the suggestion of the guest workers might require a change in federal law.

She told Syed to also contact members of the U.S Congress regarding his request.
