Letter to the Editor: Put out violence against women

The U.N. is asking people to focus on the eradication of violence against women and girls and encourages people and families to engage in discourses related to that topic and to the related topic of fostering the equality of men and women.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stated, “We all need to unite to demand accountability for the violations of the rights of women and girls. …“We must address the roots of violence against women by eradicating discrimination and changing the mindsets that perpetuate it” (at a 2010 panel as part of the 54th session of the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women).

Relating to cultural practices that are sometimes a barrier to change, this quote is appropriate: “The transformation required is difficult for women and men alike…you must continue your efforts to transcend those cultural practices that impede the progress of women.” (Bahá’i Universal House of Justice)

“Beyond Legal Reforms” is a statement suggesting if the epidemic of violence against women and girls is to end, attitude and mindset changes are equally as important as the court system. A statement summary can be found at http://www.onecountry.org/e183/e18302as_Perspective_Women_and_Violence.htm
