The students’ thank you cards were made from colorful construction paper and designed with multiple colors of ink by the students themselves.
During the ceremony, the children and their school principal Michael Burklin displayed a banner thanking the veterans for their selfless sacrifices.
The 21 students then fanned out throughout the crowd to deliver their thank-you cards to the veterans and servicemembers who were touched by the gesture.
Fourth grader Cyrus Rose said he was excited to meet the veterans but did not get a chance to talk to any of them.
He said his first time to meet a veteran was on the training ship called the “Golden Bear” which visited the island a few months ago.
Ninth grade Grace Barro, student body president, said it was her first time to experience such an event. “We don’t celebrate Veterans Day at school in the Philippines. It’s really great to see veterans and to show them that we appreciate what they’ve done for us,” she added.
The students are making more cards, and this time they are for the troops deployed overseas.
