Woman assaulted in front of child; ex-boyfriend held on bail

SUPERIOR Court Judge Joseph N. Camacho has imposed $7,500 cash bail on Jerome N. Tudela, who is accused of assaulting his partner and violating a court-issued order of protection.

Tudela, 40, is charged with assault and battery, disturbing the peace, and violating an order of protection.

At a bail hearing on Monday, Tudela was represented by Assistant Public Defender Emily Thomsen, while Assistant Attorney General Daniel Johnson appeared for the government.

After the hearing, Judge Camacho remanded Tudela to the custody of the Department of Corrections and ordered him to return to court for a preliminary hearing on June 27 at 10 a.m. and for arraignment on June 30 at 9 a.m.

According to the complaint, at 6:36 p.m. on June 6, a witness called the police to report a man — later identified as Tudela — punching a woman while she was on the ground. The woman was accompanied by a 5-year-old child.

The victim told police that she was walking with her daughter to her aunt’s residence in San Antonio when she noticed her ex-boyfriend, Tudela, crossing the road toward them.

She said Tudela asked to speak with her, but she refused and told him “No.” Despite this, Tudela persisted. As she tried to walk away, he continued to follow them. She told him she no longer wanted to be with him.

As they passed his apartment, she said Tudela tried to pull her aside and demanded that she give him the backpack she was carrying, claiming he had bought it and wanted it back.

The victim told police that Tudela then grabbed the bag. When the strap broke, she fell to the ground. As she told him to leave her alone and threatened to call the police, Tudela started to walk away — but then turned back and punched her in the left eye.

Police said a witness saw the assault and stopped to check on the victim. Tudela then fled across the street.

Officers observed that the victim sustained injuries, including swelling on the left side of her face below the eye, which was slightly swollen shut, according to the complaint.

Police noted that Tudela had violated a protective order in effect from May 22, 2025, to May 22, 2026, which states that he must not “molest, attack, strike, threaten, sexually assault, batter, or disturb the peace” of the victim.
