Abbott is recalling these products following an internal quality review, which detected the remote possibility of the presence of a small common beetle in the product produced in one production area in a single manufacturing facility.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has determined that while the formula containing these beetles poses no immediate health risk, there is a possibility that infants who consume formula containing the beetles or their larvae, could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat. If these symptoms persist for more than a few days, a physician should be consulted.
The recall of these powder infant formulas includes:
• Certain Similac powder product lines offered in plastic containers.
• Certain Similac powder product lines offered in sizes such as 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce and 12.9-ounce cans. Batch numbers Lots #1 (85485RB) and Lot # 87888RB6

NMC Educational Talent Search student excels in math and science summer camp
(NMC) — Northern Marianas College Educational Talent Search student, Brittany Santos Sablan, recently completed the math and science summer program at the Leeward Community College in Hawaii.
Sablan, a senior at Marianas High School, was selected to participate in the rigorous six-week summer program to strengthen and advance her skills and knowledge in mathematics and science, and to prepare for college. The goal of the program is to help students, primarily in high school, recognize and develop their potential to excel in these subjects in order to encourage the students to pursue postsecondary degrees in related fields.
Sablan, who plans to pursue a career in health care or technical engineering, was both “nervous and excited” as she headed to Honolulu on June 9, 2010.
“The thought of learning more about my favorite subjects — math and science — on a completely new place really motivated me to apply to be in the program,” said Sablan.
“This was the first time that I had ever been so far away from home for over a month, but I’m glad I had this experience” Sablan added.
Besides taking courses in areas such as science and research writing, trigonometry, astronomy, and senior guidance, Sablan also took time with other program participants to visit famous landmarks and local favorites on the island of Oahu.
“Studies always came first, but afterwards we were always on our feet,” said Sablan. “It was a blast.”
