Chautauqua is a form of living history in which scholars portray significant historical figures. James Sayre will use President Lincoln’s own words to recount stories from his life.
The performance, entitled “I, too, am a Kentuckian,” will provide the audience with interesting information about Lincoln’s roots and his rise to the presidency. The audience will also have an opportunity to interact with Lincoln during a Q&A session and to take photos after the performance.
The weeklong tour, Oct. 18-22, will be held in all public junior and senior high schools in Saipan, Tinian, and Rota. Mount Carmel School will host a performance for all private schools.
The public is also cordially invited to a free public performance at the American Memorial Park Visitor Center Theatre on Tuesday, Oct.19, at 6 p.m.
The Northern Mariana Islands Council for the Humanities has sponsored a number of Chautauqua programs over the past decade featuring scholars portraying Amelia Earhart, Teddy Roosevelt, Mark Twain, Harry Truman, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Thomas Jefferson.
Sayre is a noted Lincoln scholar and performer affiliated with Kentucky Chautauqua, a presentation of the Kentucky Humanities Council. The CNMI Tour is made possible by a We the People grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
