4 lawmakers share staff

Rep. Fredrick P. Deleon Guerrero, Ind.-Saipan, and House Floor Leader George N. Camacho, Ind.-Saipan, are sharing one secretary, while Rep. Joseph M. Palacios, R-Saipan, and House Minority Leader Diego T. Benavente, R-Saipan, have the same administrative officer.

In an interview yesterday, staffer Melissa M. Camacho said it’s fine with her to work for two lawmakers.

Camacho’s working station is in Deleon Guerrero’s office but she also has a desk in the House floor leader’s office.

She said working for two lawmakers at the same time is not that hard “as long as you know what you’re doing.”

Sophia M. Fejeran, for her part, has been the administrative assistant for Benavente and Palacios since the 17th Legislature was sworn in last January.

Fejeran said it’s her first time  working for two bosses, which she finds not that hard at all because she manages her time well.

In a separate interview, Deleon Guerrero said that in order to cope with the $86,000 discretionary fund allocated for each lawmaker since fiscal year 2009, he and the floor leader agreed to share one secretary.

He said lawmakers have a lot of work to do in the community so the current allocation is not going to be enough.

If the current amount of their discretionary fund is retained, he said he would have to lay off two of his staffers.
