EPA reviewing list of CUC applicants

According to the second joint stipulation issued by the U.S. District Court for the NMI on Aug. 12, the governor will appoint the new executive director on or before Oct. 29 from the list of EPA-approved applicants.

“The governor, at his discretion, may accept a list shorter than three applicants if there is one approved applicant candidate the governor would like to appoint,” the joint stipulation stated.

EPA also required CUC to submit the vetted list of applicants for the deputy executive director’s position on or before Sept. 2.

There are 27 applicants, including Assistant Executive Director Utu Abe Malae, for the CUC’s top position.

CUC human resources manager Frankie Cepeda said they submitted the evaluated list of applicants for the executive director to EPA on Aug. 31.

Within this week, he said they will submit to EPA the list of applicants for the drinking water and wastewater division manager.

However, he said, CUC has re-opened the submission of applications for the wastewater treatment plant operations supervisor.

“We want to widen the pool of applicants,” Cepeda said.

The job vacancy announcement will be closed on Sept. 14, he said.

On Aug. 5, the court held a status conference pursuant to the joint stipulation on Feb. 24, 2010 by  CUC and the U.S. Department of Justice’s Environmental Enforcement Section.

The next status conference is scheduled for the week of Dec. 13.
