SCC Chairman Reverend Fauolo told the Samoa Observer that they did not support the bill from the outset.
This view was reinforced at a Pacific Council of Churches seminar being held in Apia.
He said they expressed their views clearly in a meeting with the government during the process.
“The council does not support casinos,” he said.
“We could not have been clearer in presenting our opposition at that meeting.
“We have seen examples of the destructive effects casinos have wrought in other countries.
“Reasons why it’s now very worrying for us since it has now passed through the House.”
He said those who supported the bill did not highlight the negatives of gambling.
“It appears the people in support of casinos presented only the positive benefits seen in New Zealand and Australia,” he said.
“They didn’t place enough focus and time on the negative aspects of gambling. Aspects like broken families and destroyed individuals and communities where casinos have been established.”
