Prepaid water meter not possible: CUC

“We don’t have that kind of meter,” according to U.S. Public Health Officer Capt. Robert Lorenz, CUC’s water and wastewater division’s chief engineer.

But Lorenz said CUC continues to replace defective water meters on Saipan.

By the end of December, he said CUC should have installed new water meters, one month ahead of the deadline set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

There are no defective water meters on Tinian and Rota, he added.

CUC Assistant Executive Director Utu Abe Malae said they have already installed 400 prepaid power meters in the commonwealth.

CUC will order more meters, he added.

“Everybody wins and it will not endanger meter readers,” CUC chief finance executive Charles Warren said.

CUC cited national statistics indicating a 15 percent decrease in power consumption through the use of prepaid meters which allow customers to be aware of their usage.

Warren said residential customers can request CUC to install power meters at their homes.
