Flores nominates Mafnas to Saipan scholarship board

Mafnas will replace Vice Speaker Felicidad T. Ogumoro who resigned on Oct. 1 but will formally step down on Oct. 30.

The mayor said he nominated Mafnas, who works for the Division of Revenue and Taxation, because “I feel that he will do a good job at  SHEFA.”

With his experience, Mafnas can help improve SHEFA’s operation, the mayor said.

The current board members are Jose C. Leon Guerrero, a retired educator, and businessman John K. Tenorio.

Mafnas has accepted the nomination which needs to be confirmed by the Saipan and Northern Islands legislative delegation.

Flores said his office should be given greater authority when it comes to the operation of SHEFA.

He didn’t clarify though what particular additional authority he wants to have.

“The office should be managed by an administrator for its day to day operation, and the administrator should be able to consult with the board and follow up on issues, particularly regarding the budget for the scholarship,” he said.

Funded by poker fee collections, SHEFA provides post-secondary scholarships to qualified Saipan students.
