Wanted: Pawnshop robber

Martin was arrested after the foot chase involving two men but his companion escaped.

Department of Public Safety acting spokesman PO2 Jason Tarkong described Martin’s companion as  5’8” tall and skinny.

Police said he was armed with a sledgehammer, while Martin had a rifle and a machete.

DPS Commissioner Santiago F. Tudela recognized the assistance extended by two  men in Martin’s arrest.

At the same time, he advised the public to “never confront dangerous criminals involved in risky behavior.”

Two pawnshop employees suffered abrasions and minor injuries after they were assaulted by the suspects who were armed with a sledgehammer and a crowbar.

A 72-year-old employee suffered contusion on his chest after one of the suspects grabbed the pellet gun from the employee who was trying to defend himself.

Another employee, a 45-year-old man, was hit in the head which required nine staples.

The two employees were rushed to the Commonwealth Health Center and were released after their treatment.

The suspects wore masks and black clothing, police said.

About $6,000 cash was stolen which was subsequently recovered by the police from Martin.

Police said they received a 911 call regarding a robbery in progress at the Pink Pawn Shop at about 12:46 p.m.

Two witnesses were traveling in a car when they noticed the two suspects entering the pawnshop.

The witnesses pulled over into the parking lot, called 911, and reported the incident.

While the two suspects were robbing the establishment, the witnesses waited for them outside.

One of the witnesses armed himself with a piece of metal.

Moments later, the suspects emerged from the pawnshop and were confronted by the two witnesses.

Martin, 25, swung the rifle at one of the witnesses, but missed.

Martin dropped the rifle and ran south still armed with the machete, while his companion who was armed with a sledgehammer dropped it and ran south, police said.

Martin and his companion were chased by the witnesses into Chalan Kanoa.

Police assisted in the foot chase and later apprehended Martin who was found hiding in a storage shack located behind a residence.

Police said Martin was breathing hard and was bleeding from a small laceration to his right thumb.

The witnesses positively identified Martin as one of the suspects who robbed the pawnshop.

Martin was arrested and transported to the CHC emergency room for further treatment, and was later transported to the Department of Corrections for booking and detention.

Police learned from the two injured victims that the suspects walked into the establishment, and used the sledgehammer to break into the locked door and enter the cashier’s booth.

Recovered from Martin was cash found in his pocket.

The sledgehammer, the pellet gun rifle and the machete were also recovered by the police.

Tarkong said anyone having information about this crime should call the NMI Crime Stoppers Hotline at 234-7272.

All calls are kept anonymous, no caller ID is used and a reward of up to $1,000 is given for any information leading to an arrest.
