Gunman was caretaker of shooting range

Zhongren Li, 42, was “allegedly the caretaker of the shooting range,” which closed earlier this year, Department of Public Safety spokesman PO2 Jason Tarkong said yesterday.

“The motive is still being investigated and may be related to issues about money and the suspect’s emotional frustration,” he added.

Li left behind notes in plain view for police to find “and the incident seems premeditated,” Tarkong said.

DPS did not disclose Li’s immigration status, but said he was a Chinese national.

Li  had over 750 rounds of ammunition,  including .223 caliber, .410 shotgun rounds and .22 magnum ammunition in his Toyota Previa van.

Li shot himself in the head after killing four and wounding eight, including a four-year-old girl, Dolores Naputi, who underwent surgery at the Commonwealth Health Center for a gunshot wound to her chest.

Day nursing supervisor Gayline Blau described the girl to be “doing well” and was scheduled to be transferred to pediatrics yesterday.

She said social workers and a Red Cross counselor were on hand to assist the girl and the mother.

At the time of the shooting incident, preparations were underway for a late afternoon merienda to celebrate the girl’s birthday.

Li shot four local residents who were at a house  near the shooting range, killing Enrique Naputi, 30, Richard Borja Naputi, 22, Vince Rosario, 5, and Corinna Naputi, 2.

Enrique Naputi was Dolores Naputi’s father while Corinna Naputi was her sister.

Rosario celebrated his birthday a few weeks ago.

The shooter, driving the white Toyota Previa van, then proceeded to Marpi where he began shooting Korean tourists who were at the Last Command Post.

Two young Koreans were hit while looking for souvenirs at a vendor’s stand while a Korean male adult was shot while sipping juice from the coconut he was holding.

A total of eight Koreans, including two young children, were later rushed to CHC for gunshot wounds.

Over the weekend, the remaining Korean victim at the hospital was released after surgery.

It was learned that there was a special flight to Korean on Saturday night for  these victims.

After shooting the tourists, witnesses said the gunman headed to Banzai Cliff where three gunshots were later heard.

Responding police officers had to break the van’s rear window after they saw smoke coming from inside the vehicle where  three rifles were recovered.

Police found the shooter lying on the edge of the cliffline, several yards south of the vehicle.

A .223 rifle caliber was found strapped around his shoulder, and he had a gunshot wound to his head, police said.

There was a stench of gasoline coming out of the van which apparently was set ablaze by the gunman before he shot himself.

A plastic container with gasoline was seen on the vehicle’s floor.

Tarkong said Li attempted to destroy his personal identification and documents by setting it on fire on the passenger seat of the van registered to the previous owner of the shooting range who passed away about a year ago.
