Latte house model now on exhibit at museum

The new scale model of a latte period structure, according to CNMI Museum Executive Director Robert Hunter, is on display in the pre-contact period exhibit area of the museum.

He said the model is constructed by Chamorro craftsman, artist and historian Noel Quitugua.

“The model is exacting in its detail, which includes tools and implements, pottery, canoes and other articles that would have been associated with a household of the time,” Hunter said.

The model is based on early Spanish descriptions of latte period structures.

“There is simply no other model of a latter period structure that is as detailed or accurate as this one,” Hunter said.

Not even Guam  has a similar latte structure, he added.

“We are lucky to have someone on island with the artistry and knowledge of Chamorro history that Quitugua has,” Hunter said.

The museum is open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.
