Cross Country brings out new champions

James Castro who topped the first series last month prevailed in the 2.1 mile run around the Airport Field.

The 17-year-old Saipan Southern High School student crossed the finish line first completing the grassy course in 13 minutes and 26 milliseconds and won the first place in the Boys U18.

Trailing him was Marianas High School’s Michael Mancao.

Although no one could immediately tell if he was taking it as seriously as his brother Matthew did, the younger Mancao who had a built of an athlete also showed a great potential as he managed to keep pace behind obviously well-trained Castro.

Mancao finished second as he completed the run in 13 minutes and 22 seconds.

Settling for third was second series winner Danny Bai also of MHS. He reached the finish line in 13 minutes and 31 seconds.

In the Girls U18, Geralyn Castillo of MHS topped the race finishing it in 17 minutes; Madi Oni of SSHS came second with 17:47 and Rikka Kaiyo also of MHS placed third with 21:59 minutes.

In the Girls U14, Hopwood Junior High School dominated the race. Cris Obaldo finished first with 16:28 followed by Corine Suda with 16:58 and Janet Jones, 19:09.

Kentaro Kitagawa of Saipan International School was the lone runner to win the championship in Boys U8. He finished the one-mile course in 18 minutes and 12 seconds.

Julia Ishikawa also of SIS dominated the Girls U10 crossing the finish line in seven minutes and 49 seconds. Moena Takagi also of SIS came second with 9:21 minutes.

William Fong of Saipan Community School won the first place in Boys U12 with 6:55 minutes. Pedro Tenorio also of  SCS came second with 7:24 minutes and Jared Arriola of HJHS came third with 8:24 minutes.

Joann Reyes of HJHS finished first in Girls U12 with 6:49 minutes; Janielle Pagsolingam placed second with 7:19 minutes and Ludin Johnson of SCS, third with 7:37 minutes.
