GOP, Covenant Party must disclose campaign contributions, spending by Jan. 12

The law requires them to disclose  the contributions made to their campaign and how the money was spent.

The ruling Covenant Party, the CNMI Republican Party and their gubernatorial tickets must submit their CSAs by Jan. 12, 2010 because the gubernatorial runoff election was held on Nov. 23.

During the 2005 gubernatorial elections, candidates spent a total of over $2.7 million on their election bids.

Gov. Benigno R. Fitial and his then-running mate, former Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez, raised the most money among the four tickets,  $333,655.54, and spent close to $3,000 more than its collections.

Fitial also declared that he spent $64,301.34 of his own money while Villagomez contributed $27,000 to their campaign.

Those who fail to file their CSAs will be fined for $100 for each day of violation. They will also be referred to the Attorney General’s Office for litigation.

More than 100 candidates competed for this year’s general elections.

OPA said other candidates, including the Democratic Party, filed statements ahead of the deadline.

OPA said the CSAs will be disclosed to the public later this week when the individual responsible for assessment returns from vacation.
