Guest workers group welcomes federal ombudsman’s notice

“This gives us light and hope about our request for improved status,” said Rabby Syed, United Workers Movement president.

In its notice to the public, the federal ombudsman said the federalization law requires the U.S. Department of the Interior to make recommendations to the U.S. Congress regarding the long-term status of aliens in the CNMI.

Federal Labor Ombudsman Pam Brown declined to comment.

In the notice (see page 21), alien workers are urged to present their passports and other photo identification when they report to the ombudsman’s office in Suite 203, Marina Heights, Puerto Rico.

It was not stated in the notice if alien workers whose names are on the overstayers lists are also asked to report to the ombusdman’s office.

Syed said his group is working constantly with the federal ombudsman and other federal agencies to find ways to resolve the situation of the overstaying aliens  who were excluded by the CNMI government from its the umbrella permit program.
